Mahlchers Company History

A bunch of guys who were talented surfers, skateboarders, snowboarders, and musicians who were hanging out with us were a bunch of vultures—ready to attack anything and always hungry to succeed. We would always call people vultures who were hanging out with us and not yet set into their careers. We would all consider ourselves as vultures. One day, while the Pappas brothers and I were building our training facility, skate ramps and BMX jumps in our back yard in Carlsbad Ca. I thought about the word “mulch.” You know, like when you’re your plants are dieing you use mulch to bring them back to life and like a lion mauling something. And through mauling, mulch, and vultures, we put them all together and came up with the word “Mahlchers.” In 1997 we became The Mahlchers. It was our crew, our clique. We were hungry to be refreshed and rejuvenate ourselves into the industry and attack it with a hostile underground takeover.

image001The company officially started in 2001/2002 with a Mahlchers logo of a bird claw mixed between a pitch fork in a font. B House and I made stencils and with a can of spray-paint our crew went graffiti crazy. We would take other companies t-shirts and turn them inside out and spray paint the Mahlchers logo on them. My friend Bryan House (then Osiris shoes surf team manager) was a huge Mahlcher and we created the first street “inside out” stenciled catalog. He was a big part recruiting soldiers for our army.

We got exposure from the people in our crew that surrounded us. Our clique kept expanding by us meeting people through other people. In 2004/2005, the stenciled Mahlchers logo all of a sudden started showing up in surfing and skateboarding magazines on pros boards and on t-shirts. Throughout San Diego County and the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii, it became a hot underground item because we were viewed as being very creative and very hostile. It wasn’t a destructive attitude; it was more a driven motivation like, “WE CAN’T BE STOPPED.”

Through us being who we were, just being creative, being athletes, not coming from a lot of money and creating our own profiles for ourselves. Our crew kept getting bigger and bigger and we kept getting exposure. And through all that exposure, I was going through some hard times while I was trying to make a Mahlchers surf movie. I was literally living out of the back of my truck.

In 2006, I was approached by a gentleman by the name of Brian Reid (creative footwear designer for Osiris) who came up to me and was curious about what the Mahlchers was as he had seen all the exposure of the brand. He wanted to be a part of it and take it to the next level. In doing so, I partnered up with Brian Reid and we got the Mahlchers LLC and a business plan going.

Throughout this time, I started to get footage together for a movie. We were having fun filming skits with my friends. There was no plot or theme, just us dressing up as these silly characters. I developed a concept called The Mahlchers Suitcase. The suitcase represented the Mahlchers dreams. Everybody was trying to get a hold of the suitcase because everyone wanted a part of the dream. I didn’t have any money so I had some friends help out with the production. They took out what was inside my head and they put it into the computer. I directed them on how I saw the vision. It is a very raw movie, not a lot of people believed in it. I was driven to put it out no matter what. The Suitcase came about at the end of the summer in 2006.

THE MAHLCHERS FUTURE

The direction I envision for the Mahlchers in 2010 is that I want to incorporate young adults and teens training camps to get them from where they’re at to anywhere in life they want to be … whether it be sports, film, graphics, or music. I want to get them into a mindset of belief in themselves. Help them become the best version of themselves—mentally, physically, and emotionally. I want to create a clothing line that is a unique fit for each individual lifestyle. I want to take the Show Up and Blow Up event across the world. Whoever shows up and blows up wins a prize. Through that competition, kids can register into an elite commando training unit. I want the Mahlchers to be a mother company that funds future Mahlchers. A root, a tree, a shade for them to eventually do whatever it is they want to do. Then I will take the profits and invest them into a University Rehabilitation Training Facility for the youth that are having a hard time with dealing with problems with drugs, school, or alcohol. The U.R.T.F. will allow them to have a foundation and a stepping stone to help them become the best version of themselves in whatever their dreams and visions are.
